Chiltepin Pepper

Carriage House Farm is heading into working with more unique cultivars of vegetables, fruits, and herbs.  We have leaned heavily on a relatively few items but in 2021 will be introducing a wide range of them.

The Chiltepin Pepper is another hot pepper or Capsicium annum.  It is not to be consfused with either the Pequin or a Turkish pepper.  It is one of the few peppers native to North America though also can be found in South America.  Tepin is derived from a Nahuatl (native Aztec/Central American/Mexican culture) word meaning "flea."  They are a wild pepper that has been growing across the American South-West for centuries.

Though small, these peppers, carry a nice burst of heat.  Tepin peppers are very hot, measuring between 50,000 and 1,628,000 Scoville units.

Traditionally they’re processed without smoking.  These peppers will be dried and milled and be made into rubs for Carriage House Farm.  MadHouse Vinegar and Chloe’s Eatery will make use of them as well.
